In 1994, Erin Gruwell, an idealistic teacher, starts her first job at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California, where a voluntary integration program has been implemented. Despite its academic decline, Erin chooses the school to make a difference. She soon realizes that her students live by strict codes of loyalty and violence, with many knowing someone killed in gang-related incidents.
