Hopalong Cassidy and his friend Johnny Nelson leave their home range to work on the Tumbling-L Ranch, but they soon discover that the ranch isn't as reputable as they thought. They decide to work for the Three-J Ranch instead, helping owner Jim Jordan build a fence to protect his grazing land from rustled cattle. However, Trumbull's men try to stop them by gunfight and stampede, but Hoppy and Johnny successfully defend the Three-J and then head back to their own ranch.
