Dreamgirls background

Dreamgirls

The 1960s saw the emergence of three talented African American female soul singers, who battled personal demons and achieved great success as they dominated the pop charts.

In the early 1960s, Curtis Taylor Jr. rises to fame in the music industry by signing a trio of young women, the Dreamettes, and turning them into the headlining act, the Dreams, with a new lead singer, Deena Jones. However, he demotes the Dreams' original lead singer, Effie White, and fires her, leaving her to struggle in poverty.
