The film follows the life of black-American Chiron across three periods: childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood. Growing up in a crime-ridden Miami neighborhood with a crack-addicted mother, Chiron is a shy and withdrawn child due to his small size and neglect. He's bullied and struggles to understand the hurtful slurs hurled at him. Despite these challenges, Chiron finds solace in his friendship with Kevin and guidance from Juan, a neighborhood drug dealer, and his caring girlfriend Teresa. As he navigates his teenage years, Chiron must confront peer pressure and make his own decisions to forge a different path in life.
