Gandhi background

Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi's journey from lawyer to leader of India's fight against British colonial rule is a powerful story of nonviolent resistance.

Mohandas K. Gandhi, thrown off a South African train in 1893, launches a non-violent protest campaign for Indian rights. After arrests and international attention, the government relents, recognizing Indian rights. Gandhi returns to India, a national hero, and leads a non-violent non-cooperation campaign for independence from the British Empire. Despite setbacks, the campaign generates attention and Britain grants India's independence. However, religious tensions between Hindus and Muslims erupt into violence, leading to the Partition of India and the creation of Pakistan. Gandhi spends his final days trying to bring about peace between the two nations, ultimately being assassinated.
