At the annual "From Motive to Murder" true crime and mystery conference, Aurora "Ro" Teagarden, a librarian and president of the Real Murders Discussion Club, is asked to present and participate in a panel discussion. Unbeknownst to her, the other panelist is Lawrenceton Police Chief Lynn Smith, who has a history of resentment towards the club's involvement in murder investigations. During the conference's murder mystery play performance, a person associated with the event is killed on-stage. With one of their own being the lead suspect, Ro and the Real Murders members start their own investigation to clear their friend's name. As the investigation unfolds, they discover a list of potential suspects, including the event organizer Linda Bennett, developer Boyd Stauberg, his son Brett, librarian Andrew Wakefield, and author Robert Brown.
