Skilled getaway driver Carl "Luke" Lucas is sentenced to Terminal Island, a maximum security prison, after a botched bank robbery. He's forced to participate in the Death Match, a deadly TV series. However, the producer introduces the Death Race, a car race where inmates compete in modified vehicles. Carl must win five races to gain freedom or face a lifetime in prison.
