A self-destructive superhero, John Hancock, struggles with his public image due to his alcoholism and clumsiness, earning him the hatred of the city. Despite saving lives, his destructive tendencies have cost the city millions. When he saves a PR expert, Ray Embrey, from a train, Ray sees an opportunity to revive Hancock's reputation. He invites Hancock to dinner, introducing him to his son and wife, but Mary's mysterious aversion to Hancock creates tension.
