Jack McKenzie, a professional movie composer, struggles to make ends meet after his big-budget sci-fi movie, The Land of the Astronauts, flops at the box office. He finds work as a limo driver and befriends famous actor Thomas Bower, who appreciates his work. Jack also meets Erica, a wild Hollywood party girl, at an AA meeting and falls for her. However, his life is turned upside down by the deceptive nature of those around him, pressure from his ex-wife and her hostile boyfriend, and his own guilt over the accidental death of his youngest daughter. As a result, Jack's reality becomes distorted, and he starts seeing the world as a waking dream.
