In 1939, the Hamburg-America Line's voyage from Germany to Cuba became a desperate escape route for 937 Jews. Unbeknownst to the passengers, their visas were invalid, and only 28 were allowed to disembark in Havana. The rest were forced to sail to Florida and Canada, eventually returning to Antwerp as the low countries fell under Nazi rule.
