Charlie Babbit, a self-centered Los Angeles-based businessman, is at odds with his own life. After learning that his estranged father left him a 1949 Buick convertible and a "huge bed of roses" in his will, Charlie discovers that the remainder of the $3 million inheritance goes to his unknown autistic brother, Raymond. Charlie kidnaps Raymond and takes him on a cross-country trip to force him to hand over the inheritance. However, Raymond's peculiar habits and mannerisms, including his love for Abbott & Costello and refusal to fly except on Qantas, drive Charlie insane and lead to a journey of self-discovery and understanding.
