John Shaft, a New York Police Detective, investigates a brutal beating of a young black man, who was defending himself against racial slurs. As he delves deeper, he discovers that the attacker, Walter Wade Jr., is the son of a wealthy family and gets bailed out despite his racist behavior. Shaft becomes determined to bring Wade to justice, but Wade's connections and a hired drug dealer, Peoples Hernandez, try to silence the key witness, a waitress who can testify against him.
