Steve Martin, posing as Charles Starrett, is dispatched to Wild River to retrieve stolen gold, only to discover the town is being ravaged by The Hawk and his gang of outlaws. The Hawk attempts to assassinate Sheriff Jack Mahoney, but is apprehended and imprisoned. Steve secretly helps the Hawk escape, forging an alliance with the outlaw gang. He then dispatches a hapless photographer, Smiley Burnette, to alert the sheriff about the gang's plan to rob the express office.
