He lost money in the Wall Street crash and supported himself through writing a biography and newspaper column. His wife Clementine was a close supporter, and he loved her dearly. Despite being cast as a warmonger, Churchill continued to press his concerns about Hitler, often shouted down in Parliament. However, with accurate information from a Foreign Office civil servant, he provided reliable figures to Parliament, turning the tide. With the onset of World War II in September 1939, Churchill returned to government as the First Lord of Admiralty.
